Whenham - 11/14/2008 The Atlanta Hawks have been the doormats of the NBA for about as long as there has been an NBA. They didn't finish anywhere close to .500 last year, but they still squeaked into the playoffs in the top-heavy East. Once there, they were the only team that was able to give Boston a scare, eventually losing in Game 7. NBA Betting: Lakers a Team Worthy of 'Public' Status by T.O. Whenham - 11/14/2008 Last year's season for the Lakers ended with a frustrating, embarrassing loss to the Celtics in the NBA Finals. Whenham - 11/14/2008 After the first half of the New England Patriots' first game it seemed like the story of the year would be The Injury. Though Tom Brady's knee has largely set the tone for the season, the team has probably been better than most people expected they would be. Sure, their loss last night to the Jets puts them in an unfamiliar situation - out of first place in the AFC East. Still, they are sitting at 6-4 and very much in the wild card hunt. BCS bashing is the favorite activity of the media and college football fans. I don't agree. I think that a playoff is a bad idea for a lot of reasons. That's not to say that I think the BCS is perfect. It's far from it. It's just that the playoff would be no better. Winston Churchill said that democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others that have been tried. That's pretty much how I feel about the BCS. Don't agree with me? Fourth Down and Inches by Doc - 11/12/2008 Our Big Ten selections rolled last week as we released Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Western Michigan and we nailed the Superfecta by winning all four. Even though Ohio State was our top play of the week, the most gratifying selection might have been Iowa. The Hawkeyes beat Penn State straight up with a field goal at the buzzer and certainly looked good on defense for 60 minutes. Whenham - 11/12/2008 The Tennessee Volunteers put forth one of the most disgusting performances of the year this weekend against Wyoming. There is nothing worse you can say about a team than that they quit. The Vols quit. Badly. Sure, they have excuses - the season is totally lost, they won't be bowl eligible, the coach is on the way out, and it has to be hard to get up in the morning. Still, there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever that can explain losing at home when you are favored by 27. Wyoming was up 13-0 at the half, and cruised to a 13-7 win in a totally unwatchable game. Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements by Robert Ferringo - 11/11/2008 By this point in the football season the oddsmakers have all of the empirical and substantive data that they need to produce spreads with surgical precision each week.
